It was when the woman turned towards the camera when Cummings realized that he got it wrong. The woman he was watching all along was not who he thought it was.

Finally, he found the answer to his missing food misery. All this time, he was actually sharing his food involuntarily with a stranger woman who had been hiding out in his apartment.
