Awesome - Teacher Goes Viral After Teaching Girls About Useful Life Skills
Gone are the days when women are only expected to do what ‘women’ should be doing, and that includes house chores and staying at home to take care of the family. Nowadays, both males and females have equal responsibilities not only for the family but for the community as well.
Even in schools, gender equality is slowly being taught and practiced. For this generation, schools are making sure that they also teach life skills like handling money, home repair, healthcare, cooking, finding a job, first aid, self-defense, and even car maintenance. These are the things that were not usually taught at school.
But later on, educators found that these are the skills that young kids need to learn that will be extremely helpful when they grow up and become adults.
Luckily, there are teachers these days who make it their goal to help their students learn about these basic life skills. A teacher from Alaska is setting an example as he lets his students butcher a moose. Also, a teacher from Iowa made an experiment that teaches the students about racial prejudice.
Another school in Manly New South Wales Australia does not limit its students in learning the basic subjects and topics included in the curriculum. Instead, they also offer life lessons that can help them, especially during emergency situations.
This happened at the Stella Maris College and students here were taught how to do basic ar maintenance all by themselves. These lessons included tire change, checking tire pressure, oil, water, and a lot more.
They shared this on their Facebook page, writing: “Our Year 11 girls today were taught some essential DIY car maintenance skills by Galmatic; how to change a tire and check tire pressure, how to check oil, water, and coolant levels, what to do in in the event of a minor car crash and so much more. ”
The Galmatic is a foundation that aims to provide women and teenage drivers with basic car maintenance skills through interactive workshops that are all related to car maintenance. These courses help students learn basic car repairs and maintenance which will reduce the stressful visits to the mechanic. Also, students here are taught what they should do when confronted by these situations.
Just think of it, if all young women are confident that they can do all these things that usually only men can do, they will become more independent. And this is exactly what this school wanted to achieve.
Stella Maris College received positive reactions and comments. One of them wrote, “This is fantastic. Wish I could have joined in & learned this skill. Well done Stella for teaching our girls how to be strong & independent. ” A mother whose daughter is attending this college commented on how these lessons are very important for the students.
She wrote, “As a mum of one of those years 11 girls today and ex Stella student myself, a really worthwhile session. Table topic tonight at dinner. Here’s to safe knowledgeable drivers. ”
There is no doubt that these initiatives will only gain a positive impact on their students’ lives. More parents are hoping that other schools will also follow through. These basic life skills are very important for teenagers these days.
